The Hotel El Sapo Dorado, named for the famous golden toad of Monteverde, is located on a steep hill between Santa Elena and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Owned by Geovanny Arquedas and Hannah Lowther, who arrived in Monteverde approximately ten years before the Quakers, the El Sapo Dorado began as a popular nightclub and restaurant and gradually developed into a charming hotel. The Hotel El Sapo Dorado consists of secluded cabins surrounded by grassy lawns, many of which have private terraces with views of the Bay of Nicoya and the wonderful sunsets. The spacious cabins are all built from native hardwoods inside and out and have enormous windows that let in tons of natural light and high ceilings that keep them cool. Some of the older cabins have fireplaces that take of the chill that sometimes permeates the cloud forest in the evening and during the rainy season. The cabins are tastefully with queen sized beds and standard accoutrements.

The Hotel El Sapo Dorado offers thirty comfortable, secluded and beautifully appointed suites surrounded by large grassy areas, perfect for playing children or for creating a sense of privacy for your visit. The hotel also owns and manages Reserva Sendero Tranquilo and a series of private, well maintained trails into the primary cloud forest. A private masseur is available for well deserved massages after a day of exploring and hiking and other activities. The excellent restaurant at the Hotel El Sapo Dorado is well known for its pastas, pizzas and vegetarian dishes. Locally grown organic produce is used at every opportunity and the bar is open every day until 10pm for a last minute drink before bed.
